New Directions

New Directions looks after women and children and are in a private, child-friendly area of our Health Service between Thithigoo Crèche and the Specialist Clinic at the Bega Clinic (16-18 MacDonald Street).

We can provide a free crèche and transport to and from clinics and appointments. Just call Bega on 9022 5500 and ask to be put through to New Directions.

The aim of this program is to actively engage and support families with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander children in a manner which promotes the health and wellbeing of the mother, child and family.

The program employs a Coordinator, Midwives, Health Practitioners, Doctor and a Maternal Support Worker.

The services we offer include:

  • regular antenatal and post natal clinics and classes
  • Women’s Business clinics, Immunisation clinics and Child Health clinics.
  • Breastfeeding counselling
  • Tours of the Maternity wing at the Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital
  • Assistance with transport and childcare
  • Advocacy and support for clients.

We also currently we offer a number of different programs including:

* Midwives Clinic Everyday: Congratulations on your pregnancy! Our New Directions staff would like to help you to stay healthy during pregnancy and raise a strong baby. It is important to see the midwife as soon as you know, or think, you may be pregnant. Our Bega midwife, Jane, will let you know how often to come and visit, usually monthly to start with and more often as the pregnancy progresses. If you attend a minimum of 5 ante-natal appointments and we get your hospital booking done then when you have your baby we have a gift for you to take home – either a baby seat, pram, porta cot or bubs basket.

* Women’s Business Clinics:   (Monday to Friday from 9) Our women’s health nurse can talk to you about many different women’s health issues like regular pap smears, breast screening, STI’s, urinary problems, contraception and more. All women should have a well women’s check up every 2 years. * Child Health Check Up’s:   (Mon –Fri from 9) Come and see our friendly Nurses regularly to make sure your little one is growing strong and healthy. All children who complete the annual ATSI child health check up will receive a gift card to take home. No bookings are needed.

* Children’s Ear Screening (Monday-Friday from 9am) Are you worried about your child’s hearing? Has your little one got mucky ears or had ear infections? Healthy ears gives children a sound start for school. Come in and get your child’s ears checked today, it only takes a few minutes.

* Childhood immunisations (Monday to Friday from 9am) Childhood immunisations protect children from many diseases and are very important. Immunisations usually occur at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 4 years of age.

* Paediatricians Clinic:   Every Tuesday (9-11.30) visiting Paediatricians (children’s specialist) visit Bega. If you have any concerns about your child and would like them to see the Paediatrician please speak to the New Directions team.

* Adult Immunisation:   Even you parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, uncles, aunties’,  nieces and nephew’s, the whole family need to look after themselves. Get your Fluvax done early before winter and all year round to fight against the hard flu.  If you are scared of the needle, we have a Buzzy Bee that will comfort you and occupy you while you have your shot to fight the flu before it gets you.  There will be a FluVax Day before winter every year where you can get some hot soup too, so keep an eye if you see any poster around Bega campus.

New Directions is an IAHP and Footprints To Better Health funded Maternal and Child Services program which has been offered at our Health Service since February 2009.
