New Directions is an OATSIH funded Maternal and Child Services program which has been offered at our Health Service since February 2009.
The aim of this program is to actively engage and support young families with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander children in a manner which promotes the health and well being of the mother, child and family.
New Directions is located in a private, child-friendly wing of our Health Service. Specific initiatives include the delivery of regular antenatal clinics and classes, Women’s Business clinics, Immunisation clinics and Child Health clinics.
Other special programs run by New Directions include Breastfeeding counseling, tours of the Maternity wing at the Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital, assistance with transport and childcare, and advocacy and support for clients. The program employs a Coordinator, Female Doctor, Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurse, Aboriginal Health Worker, and Maternal Support Worker.
